  • One of the most evocative ruined castles in England
  • More than 1,000 years of turbulent history
Castle View visitor centre explores the lives (and deaths) of past residents

  • The Swanage Railway operates a steam train service to Corfe

What's new this year (2009)

After two years of an exciting programme of essential conservation work, full access is now available to all parts of the castle previously closed to visitors

 Out & About:
Swanage Steam Railway

The Swanage Railway offers a more extensive heritage steam and diesel timetable train service than virtually any other preserved railway. Steam and diesel galas, Family Fun Day events, plus regular Evening Dining services complement themed events such as our highly popular Santa Special trains during the run up to Christmas. Easy parking at Norden Station for visitors with cars enhances the experience of a unique journey through six miles of beautiful Dorset scenery in the South of England, with easy access from neighbouring Hampshire. You can even take charge of a train by taking one of the Driving Experience courses! With easy car parking at Norden, our stations at Corfe Castle, Harman's Cross and Herston provide access to historic villages, country walks and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, whilst also providing a valuable transport service for the local community.

The Southern Railway atmosphere combined with a trip to Swanage with its award winning sandy beach is perfect for enthusiasts and families alike.

Trains on the award-winning standard gauge preserved steam railway operate over the six miles of track between the south coast seaside resort of Swanage and our convenient station at Norden, in the beautiful Isle of Purbeck, passing the magnificent ruins of Corfe Castle.

Enjoy an evening out and about at Corfe Castle without worrying about drinking and driving. Evening diesel service runs throughout summer months

Out & About:
Ballard Down

The bungalow is situated just out of the town surrounded by the beautiful Ballard Down.

Ballard Down is an area of chalk downland in Dorset, southern England. The down forms a headland between Studland and Swanage bays in the English Channel, and once formed part of a continuous chalk ridge between what are now west Dorset and the Isle of Wight, part of the Southern England Chalk Formation. The sharp slope of the down faces south, over Swanage, intersecting with the sea as Ballard Cliff. The down was an area of calcareous grassland for up to 1,000 years until World War II, when there was a sudden rise in the need for arable agricultural land. Since then the need for agricultural land has declined and the down, now owned by the National Trust, has largely been returned to grassland. The National Trust allows grazing on the down in order to prevent it becoming the natural oak woodland climax community.

Old Harry and Handfast Point mark the easternmost end of the 'Jurassic Coast',.
The chalk cliffs at this end of the Dorset coast are the youngest rocks on the site, being deposited during the Upper Cretaceous period, some 70 to 90 million years ago.

 Out & About:
Blue Pool

One of Dorset's best loved attractions since 1935.

Set north of the Purbeck Hills between Wareham and Corfe Castle off the A351.

The Blue Pool at Furzebrook constantly varies in colour. Very fine clay in suspension in the water diffracting light in different ways producing a spectrum of colour sometimes green sometimes turquoise.

Set in a deep clay bowl steps lead down to the waters edge or up to views of the Purbeck Hills, The Pool is surrounded by 25 acres of heath woodland and gorse interlaced with sandy paths that seem to take you to another world.

Studland is the richest 1,000 hectares (2,400 acres) for wild flowers in Britain. There are several trails through the sand dunes and woodlands, including bird hides at Little Sea. Studland Beach is just one highlight of the 3,200-hectare (8,000-acre) Purbeck Estate cared for by the National Trust.
